Veteran journalist and former presidential candidate, Dele Momodu, recently shared intriguing insights on the political landscape in Nigeria. According to Momodu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is displaying signs of fear towards Atiku Abubakar and the emerging opposition coalition.
In a discussion on Politics Today, Momodu expressed his observations about the ongoing smear campaign against Atiku. He emphasized that such actions indicate a sense of insecurity within the APC regarding Atiku’s influence. Momodu remarked,
“The moment you see people waving a campaign of calumny against Atiku you know that they feel threatened by him.”
Furthermore, Momodu highlighted the qualities he admires in Atiku Abubakar as a leader. He commended Atiku’s commitment to his ambitions without relying on state governors for financial support. Momodu praised Atiku’s investments in education and agriculture while emphasizing his ethical approach to politics:
“Atiku will never call us to find someone in INEC to rig on his behalf.”
Reflecting on Peter Obi’s leadership potential within the coalition, Momodu expressed confidence in Obi but also stressed the importance of democratic processes in selecting a leader from among key figures like Obi, Atiku, and Rotimi Amaechi.
“I have never asked anyone not to support Obi… if you ask me who should lead the coalition, it would be Obi,”
said Momodu. He advocated for a fair competition where supporters actively campaign for their preferred candidate:
“Let them all go to the field… that is my belief and I don’t think anything is wrong with that.”
Momodu voiced optimism about the strength of the opposition coalition compared to past political movements. He noted with pride that this initiative represents more than just a merger of individuals but rather a cohesive movement gaining momentum.
“The coalition is fully ready and prepared unlike the APC… it’s a movement… I’m very proud of the coalition,”
emphasized Momodu.
These insightful remarks from Dele Momodu shed light on the intricate dynamics shaping Nigerian politics. His analysis underscores deep-rooted perceptions and concerns within political circles regarding power dynamics and strategic alliances.
As Nigeria navigates its political terrain, voices like Dele Momodu’s offer valuable perspectives on leadership qualities, democratic principles, and strategic collaborations essential for fostering inclusive governance and sustainable development.
