Ex-SGF Babachir Lawals Disassociation from APC Sparks Party Implosion Fears

Amid whispers and speculation within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Babachir David Lawal, a prominent figure in the party and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has officially announced his departure from the APC. As concerns about internal rifts and potential implosion loom over the party, Lawal’s move has stirred significant attention.

In a formal resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of Bangshika Ward in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, titled “Letter of Resignation from the APC,” Lawal declared his exit from the party. Interestingly, he clarified that he has not yet aligned with any other political group despite leaving APC.

Quoting from his resignation letter, Lawal expressed, “In due course, I will make public my current political affiliations where I plan to join other compatriots to work towards making Nigeria a better living place for all citizens.” With this decision effective immediately, Lawal extended warm regards to members of his former party.

The absence of a specific reason for his departure has sparked curiosity among political observers. However, it is noted that Lawal had been at odds with President Bola Tinubu regarding certain issues like the choice of a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the run-up to the 2023 presidential election process.

Following Lawal’s exit, concerns about potential disintegration within APC have gained traction. There are speculations about how this might impact the party’s stability leading up to the 2027 general elections. Particularly in Northern regions of Nigeria where sentiments are running high among members.

It is worth recalling recent developments such as a coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar which adopted African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for opposing APC’s dominance. These movements signify shifts in power dynamics and could shape future political landscapes.

Experts suggest that such defections and realignments could alter traditional voting patterns and influence voter behavior significantly. The evolving political landscape indicates a broader reconfiguration within Nigerian politics where alliances are being forged and broken based on emerging dynamics and interests.

As parties strategize ahead of upcoming elections, analysts predict more movements between factions as politicians seek alignments that best serve their aspirations and agendas. The intricate dance of power play continues as individuals navigate through shifting alliances in pursuit of their political ambitions amidst changing tides within Nigerian politics.

Lawal’s departure may just be one piece in a larger puzzle reflecting deeper underlying currents reshaping Nigeria’s political terrain towards an uncertain future filled with both challenges and opportunities.
