The passing of the legendary former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Prince Peter “Dodo Mayana” Rufai, has stirred a wave of emotions and tributes from Nigerians worldwide. The Rufai family shared their heartfelt appreciation for the outpouring of love and support received during this difficult time. In an official statement released, the family confirmed that the 61-year-old football icon peacefully departed at 6 am on Thursday, 3rd July 2025, after a brief illness.

Expressing their profound sorrow over his demise, the family conveyed their gratitude to God for blessing Prince Peter Rufai with a remarkable life that not only touched Nigeria but also left an indelible mark globally through his exceptional football career. The statement reflected on his impactful journey and recognized the significant role he played in putting Nigerian football on the world map.

“Despite our shock and sadness at his rather sudden demise, we are indeed extremely grateful to God Almighty for the impactful life that He granted Prince Peter Rufai through a very successful football career that made him world-famous,”

stated the family.

Peter Rufai: A Football Icon Across Continents
Renowned as Nigeria’s first FIFA World Cup goalkeeper who graced the field during USA ’94 and France ’98, Rufai’s illustrious career transcended borders and spanned multiple countries. With 66 caps for the Super Eagles and participation in four Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, he played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s historic AFCON victory in Tunisia in 1994. Notably, despite being a goalkeeper, he even managed to score a goal during his international tenure.

His professional journey took him from representing Nigeria’s Sharks of Port Harcourt to showcasing his talents in Benin Republic, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. Upon retirement from active play, Rufai returned home with a mission to nurture youth talent and promote grassroots sports development through Staruf Sports Development Limited.
