Australian cricket fans were hit with surprising news as the explosive batsman Glenn Maxwell recently announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs). At 36 years old, having played 149 ODIs and smashing an impressive 3,990 runs, Maxwell decided it was time to step away from the demanding 50-over format. But fear not, cricket enthusiasts, as he is not hanging up his bat entirely just yet.

Maxwell revealed that he will continue to grace the Twenty20 format with his presence, setting his sights on the upcoming T20 World Cup. The cricketer expressed how the physical toll of playing ODIs had started to weigh on him. In a heartfelt statement, Maxwell shared,

“I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions.”

Often referred to as “Big Show

” for his entertaining and all-action style of play, Maxwell has been a fan favorite known for his explosive batting performances. Reflecting on his decision, he mentioned a candid conversation with George Bailey, chair of selectors. He acknowledged that it was time to pave the way for newer talents eyeing the 2027 World Cup: “

It’s time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own.

Maxwell’s last appearance in ODI cricket was marked by Australia’s Champions Trophy semifinal defeat against India earlier this year. Following this exit from ODIs, another veteran player Steve Smith also bid adieu to the format.

Throughout his illustrious career, Maxwell boasted an impressive strike rate of 126.70 in ODIs – ranking second-highest globally – along with four centuries and 23 half-centuries under his belt. An adept off-spin bowler as well, he managed to claim 77 wickets along the way.

One particular standout moment that etched Maxwell’s name in cricketing history was during the ODI World Cup against Afghanistan in Mumbai back in 2023. Batting at number seven when Australia was struggling at 91-7 while chasing a daunting total of 293 runs for victory – talk about pressure! Despite battling severe cramps in scorching conditions, Maxwell delivered an extraordinary innings scoring an unbeaten double century (201 runs) off just 128 balls.

In what can only be described as sheer brilliance under pressure, he partnered with Pat Cummins at number nine where together they orchestrated a remarkable unbroken stand of 202 runs – Cummins contributing just twelve! This partnership led Australia to clinch victory against Afghanistan and proceeded them towards lifting the tournament trophy after defeating India in the final showdown at Ahmedabad.

Reflecting on Maxell’s stellar contributions throughout his career path Bailey remarked admiringly saying,”

…one-day game’s most dynamic players.” He praised Maxell’s natural talent across various facets of play from field energy downplaying bowling skills emphasizing superb longevity coupled with undying passion for representing Australia.

Bailey added some words of assurance stating “Fortunately, he still has much offer Australia in T20 format” expressing confidence that Maxell will remain pivotal force building momentum towards next year early world cup.”

As Glenn Maxwell closes one chapter culminating magnificently spanning over hundred fifty matches international one day career laden landmarks including towering record hundred fifty six sixes one day internationals there exists no doubt fans eager witness unfolding chapters anticipated success awaiting him t2o world cup journey ahead
