The mounting dissatisfaction among the populace poses a significant challenge to his aspirations for re-election in 2027.
As the country gears up for the 2027 elections, analysts emphasize the importance for Ruto’s administration to not only fulfill its economic pledges but also to adopt a more conciliatory approach to resonate with a younger, more educated demographic. Mucahid Durmaz, a Senior Africa Analyst at risk intelligence firm Verisk Maplecroft, highlights that economic hardships and allegations of police violence present formidable obstacles to Ruto’s re-election bid.
Recent anti-government protests, which resulted in 31 fatalities, underscore the deep-seated grievances shared by many Kenyans. The protesters, comprising a significant number of young individuals, are driven by economic hardships, escalating prices, and a desire for governmental accountability. Festus Muiruri, a 22-year-old protester, reflects the sentiments of many when he expresses the need for their voices to be heard.
Ruto’s government has been criticized for its sluggish response to public discontent, with instances such as backing down on proposed tax hikes only after facing intense public pressure.
