Microsoft is undergoing a significant transformation with the recent announcement of layoffs affecting 9,100 employees, representing about 4% of its global workforce. The impact of these job cuts is particularly felt within the Microsoft Gaming division, affecting key entities such as Xbox, ZeniMax, and King Studios.
Reports indicate that teams at ZeniMax and King Studios are bearing the brunt of this restructuring. ZeniMax, known for developing popular titles like Elder Scrolls and Fallout, is set to reduce its workforce by approximately 10%, equating to around 200 individuals. Similarly, King Studios, recognized for creating Candy Crush, is also making substantial cutbacks.
Furthermore, Turn 10 Studios, responsible for the beloved Forza Motorsport series, has experienced over 70 job losses as part of this realignment effort. Additionally, development on anticipated titles like Perfect Dark and Everwild has been halted. This decision has led to the closure of The Initiative studio which was working on Perfect Dark.
In response to these changes within the gaming division, Phil Spencer—Xbox chief—underscored the importance of prioritizing opportunities that drive long-term success. In an internal memo addressing staff members affected by the layoffs, Spencer emphasized the need for operational efficiency and strategic focus stating:
“To position Gaming for enduring success… we will end or decrease work in certain areas…”
Expressing empathy towards impacted employees’ emotional well-being during this challenging period, Spencer conveyed appreciation for their contributions by saying: “I am grateful for your time, energy and creativity.”
He also reassured employees about Microsoft’s unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional gaming experiences while safeguarding projects with high potential.
These job cuts are not isolated incidents but part of a broader trend across various Microsoft divisions over recent years. The timeline reveals a sequence of previous layoffs:
– January 2024: Approximately 1.900 jobs lost at Activision Blizzard & Xbox
– May 2024: Studio closures & additional job reductions
– June 2024: Over 1.000 layoffs in HoloLens & Azure
– September 2024: Further reduction involving cutting roles within Xbox
– June 2025: Preceding these recent lay-offs were an additional loss of 305 jobs
