Top Center Fielders: J-Rod, Crow-Armstrong, Buxton Rankings

Spring Training Rankings: Who Are the Top Center Fielders in MLB?

As the baseball season approaches, it’s time to dive into the rankings of the top players at each position for the upcoming 2026 MLB season. Buster Olney from ESPN has conducted a survey within the industry to compile the top 10 players at every position, and today, we focus on the elite center fielders.

This ranking aims to spotlight the best players for the upcoming season specifically, disregarding long-term potential or career achievements. The positional rankings will be revealed over the next couple of weeks, with each day dedicated to a different position. Here’s the schedule: starting pitchers (Feb. 16), relief pitchers (Feb. 17), catchers (Feb. 18), first basemen (Feb. 19), second basemen (Feb. 20), third basemen (Monday), shortstops (Tuesday), corner outfielders (Wednesday), designated hitters (Friday).

Among the top center fielders is Byron Buxton, who is looking to build on his impressive performance in the 2025 season, which was one of his healthiest and most outstanding showings since 2017. Despite his prowess, the 32-year-old finds himself in a peculiar situation within the Minnesota Twins organization.

The Twins have significantly reduced their payroll by approximately 35% over the last three years, down to $106 million, following a series of trades that led to a disappointing 92-loss season in 2025. With the shift in ownership to Tom Pohlad, there’s a renewed emphasis on winning in the immediate future.

While speculation suggested further roster changes and potential trades, including players like Joe Ryan and possibly Buxton, the Twins surprised many by signaling their intent to compete this year. However, just before the start of spring training, the departure of Derek Falvey, the head of baseball operations, added another layer of uncertainty to the team’s direction.

Despite Buxton’s significant contract of around $50 million for the next three years, his no-trade clause complicates any potential moves, leaving him in a limbo of sorts. The outfielder is keen on staying with the Twins but remains wary of the organization’s commitment to him.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Buxton expressed his desire for clarity from the team’s management, stating, “All it takes is for somebody at the top to go to the media — ‘We’re not trading you.’ Trade rumors stop.”

While the situation unfolds, Buxton continues to be recognized as one of the premier center fielders in the league. Let’s take a look at the top 10 rankings:

  1. Julio Rodriguez, Seattle Mariners
At just 25 years old, Rodriguez is on the cusp of greatness. His performance post-All-Star break last season showcased his potential, with an impressive OPS of .900 and 18 home runs. He’s honing his skills against different types of pitchers, excelling against starters but facing challenges against relievers.
  2. Pete Crow-Armstrong, Chicago Cubs
Crow-Armstrong’s offensive stats varied widely last season, but his defensive abilities remained exceptional throughout. A player to watch as he refines his overall game.

Baseball fans eagerly await the upcoming season to see how these top center fielders will perform and if any surprises await in this dynamic position.
