Unusual Rainfall Patterns in July: Weather Forecast for Belém and Coastal Areas This Weekend

Belém, known for its vibrant culture and lush landscapes, typically experiences the beginning of the Amazonian Summer in July. This season usually brings reduced rainfall and soaring temperatures across the Pará region. However, the year 2025 is proving to be an exception, defying climatic norms with significantly above-average rainfall and a forecast of instability looming over the weekend in various parts of the state.

As of the 10th of July, Belém has already received 120.2 mm of rainfall, accounting for 77% of the monthly historical average of 156 mm. The unexpected weather patterns have been attributed to factors such as intensified trade winds, which bring moisture from the ocean, and abnormal warming of the Equatorial Atlantic waters along the Paraense coast. This unique combination favors the formation of convective clouds, often resulting in rapid, intense downpours accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

Looking ahead to the weekend forecast, the Metropolitan Region of Belém and Mosqueiro are anticipated to experience overcast skies on Friday. Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, with Mosqueiro facing an 80% chance of rainfall. Temperatures may reach 30°C, with a heat index of up to 35°C. Saturday and Sunday are likely to see isolated showers, particularly in the afternoon, with heat indices peaking at 37°C.

Moving to the coastal town of Salinópolis, similar weather conditions are predicted. Anticipate sporadic showers throughout Friday and the weekend, with temperatures ranging between 27°C and 28°C. In Bragança, Friday is expected to be the rainiest day, with an 85% chance of precipitation between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. By Sunday, the heat index could surpass 35°C.

In the Santarém region, weather fluctuations are influenced by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), with thunderstorms and showers expected daily. While maximum temperatures are not projected to exceed 30°C, the heat index could soar to 34°C. The only exception in the state is the Redenção region, in the south and southeast of Pará, where atmospheric blocking inhibits cloud formation. Residents can look forward to clear skies and intense heat, with a high of 35°C.

It is crucial for the population to stay vigilant by monitoring meteorological bulletins and any potential alerts. Heavy rainfall in urban areas can lead to flooding, tree fall incidents, and disruptions in power supply.

“This scenario demonstrates that, even during a traditionally dry period, the climate in the Amazon region can be unpredictable. The ocean-borne moisture and warming waters play a direct role in this behavior,”

explains Adriroseo R. Alves dos Santos, the Inmet coordinator in Pará.

In conclusion, as nature continues to showcase its unpredictability, it serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between environmental factors and human habitation. The unanticipated rainfall in July not only impacts daily life but also underscores the need for resilience and adaptability in the face of changing weather patterns. Stay informed, stay safe, and embrace the beauty of nature’s surprises in the lush landscapes of Belém and beyond.
