Joburg Creative Rides auction to feature rare eight-cylinder classics

The anticipation is palpable as the Creative Rides winter auction approaches, promising a captivating showcase of 40 classic and collector cars at the company’s Bryanston showroom. Among the coveted vehicles up for auction are two of South Africa’s most iconic, home-grown cars: the original 1971 Ford Capri Perana V8 and a 1973 Chevrolet Firenza Can Am. These timeless classics embody a rich heritage of high-performance motoring and racing prowess.

The Ford Capri Perana V8, a local gem crafted by the legendary Basil Green, boasts a 5.0I V8 engine sourced from a Mustang, delivering exhilarating power and performance. The auction features the esteemed BG No 126, complete with distinctive chassis stamps, widened Rostyle wheels, and Green’s signature cooling enhancements. A true rarity, the Chevrolet Firenza Can Am, one of only 100 ever produced, stands as a formidable contender on the track with its V8 engine. Developed by the late Basil van Rooyen, a notable local racing driver, this Firenza Can Am showcases unique features like the aluminum rear wing and striking black-on-white paint scheme, powered by a potent 5.7l V8 motor.

The auction lineup also includes the 1972 Ford Fairmont GT and 1972 Chevrolet SS, offering a South African twist on Australian classics. The immaculate Fairmont GT, with its original white paint, factory shaker bonnet scoop, and chrome GT hubcaps, exudes vintage charm with only 37,000km on the odometer. On the other hand, the vibrant orange Chevrolet SS, inspired by the Australian Holden Monaro GTS, boasts a 5.7l V8 engine and a mere 27,800km mileage, embodying the allure of classic V8 muscle cars.

Enthusiasts of modern eight-cylinder powerhouses will find delight in the Mercedes-AMG E55 sedan with a 5.5l supercharged V8 and the 1994 Dodge Viper R/T featuring an imposing 8.0l V10 engine paired with a manual transmission. The auction also features a diverse array of British classics such as Jaguar E-Type coupes, an MG MGA roadster, Aston Martins, and a Bentley Brooklands, alongside German icons like Mercedes-Benzes and high-performance BMW M cars, including the rare 2017 M4 GTS.

Celebrating the ingenuity of South African manufacturers from the 1970s and 1980s, Creative Rides CEO Kevin Derrick reflects on the enduring legacy of these vehicles. He remarks, “The cars and bikes from that era were not only world-class in their time but also embody a unique blend of local heritage and global appeal.” The auction, accessible to remote bidders via live stream, promises an immersive experience for automotive enthusiasts seeking to own a piece of motoring history.

As the auction day draws near, the opportunity to acquire these exceptional eight-cylinder classics represents more than a mere transaction; it symbolizes a connection to a bygone era of automotive excellence and craftsmanship. The fusion of nostalgia, performance, and rarity encapsulated in each vehicle transcends mere ownership, offering a glimpse into the enduring allure of classic cars and their timeless appeal.
