London Lions Ambitious Plans Building a New Basketball Arena for the Community

London Lions, a prominent British basketball team, has set its sights on constructing a brand-new purpose-built arena to serve as the future home for both its men’s and women’s teams. The ambitious project, spearheaded by team owner Tomas Okmanas, aims to create a state-of-the-art 10,000-seater venue that will not only host top-tier basketball competitions but also act as a focal point for community engagement and talent development initiatives.

To kickstart this monumental undertaking, London Lions have enlisted the expertise of Trivandi and The Sports Consultancy Group, renowned agencies with extensive experience in sports infrastructure and venue strategy. These partners will play a crucial role in conducting a comprehensive feasibility study that will assess the strategic and commercial viability of the proposed arena. This study will encompass various aspects such as location options, delivery models, investment frameworks, and economic/social impact analysis.

“We are proud to partner with two of the world’s leading firms in sports infrastructure and venue strategy,”

said Lenz Balan, President and CEO of London Lions.

“This arena is about more than just basketball; it’s about building something that reflects the ambition and diversity of London.”

The significance of this project extends beyond providing a new home for the Lions’ teams. It represents an opportunity to create a thriving hub for basketball enthusiasts across London by offering youth programs, community outreach initiatives, coaching education opportunities, and elite player development pathways.

In addition to the main arena project, London Lions are also exploring the establishment of dedicated community basketball centers throughout the capital. These centers would play a vital role in supporting grassroots development efforts and expanding access to quality training facilities for aspiring players.

The proposed arena has garnered significant support from key stakeholders including Mayor Sadiq Khan who views it as a catalyst for promoting growth within the sport of basketball in London. Despite not disclosing an exact cost estimate for the construction, Okmanas has expressed his commitment to investing

“hundreds of millions of pounds”

into this visionary endeavor.

“This arena is about more than just basketball; it’s about building something that reflects the ambition and diversity of London,”

remarked Balan.

“It will be a modern venue capable of hosting elite basketball competitions while anchoring a wider ecosystem that gives back to the community.”

The road ahead may present challenges as British basketball navigates through ongoing league restructuring dynamics. The recent licensing agreement between BBF and GBBL consortium has sparked legal disputes with existing league operators like SLB alleging breaches in competition laws.

As London Lions embark on their journey towards realizing this transformative vision for British basketball, their pioneering spirit shines bright amidst uncertainties surrounding the sport’s professional landscape. Through collaboration with industry-leading experts and unwavering dedication to community empowerment, they stand poised to leave an indelible mark on London’s sporting legacy.
